Potential Roma Attack Lineup for the 2026-27 Season
Roma has concluded its UK tour with defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Cardiff City, and a 4-1 victory over fourth-tier Newport County. The team has one pre-season friendly remaining against Borussia Dortmund before kicking off their Serie A season against Fiorentina on August 24.
During the match against Brighton, Gasperini used a 3-4-2-1 formation with Paulo Dybala and Matias Soule in trequartista roles behind Donyell Malen in attack. However, he substituted his Argentine attackers midway through the second half, introducing Santiago Castro.
Gasperini made a switch from a 3-4-2-1 formation to a 3-4-1-2 with Malen playing on the right of the attack, Castro to his left, and substitute Luigi Cherubini as the lone trequartista.
Roma spent €35 million plus bonuses to sign Santiago Castro from Bologna during the summer transfer window, but Gasperini has expressed dissatisfaction with recent signings. The coach stated: 'Compared to last term, I asked for a defender, a winger, and two strikers'.
Prospects for the Next Transfer Window
Gasperini continues to seek new arrivals, particularly in attack, but also one new defender before the transfer window closes in a few weeks.
'Compared to last term, I asked for a defender, a winger, and two strikers,' Gasperini told the press after Roma's 4-1 defeat against Cardiff City. 'Of course, if a player leaves, then he has to be replaced too. This was my objective, it doesn’t seem so difficult or insurmountable to me.
'We are clearly trying to get quality players like Castro.'
